In reverse order of which I read them, here are a dozen reading recommendations for Respect Life Month. They are a varied bunch! Romance, dystopian, women’s fiction, mystery, young adult, short stories, and suspense. And, yes, even adventure dinosaur dystopian!
I think the butterflies knew what was coming that day – that he was coming, and that life as we knew it was about to change.
I love a first line that hints at things to come but yet leaves a lot of ambiguity. Who’s he? Where is he coming from and why? Would life change for the better or for worse?
We’ve filled out yard with plants to attract butterflies, and my daughter raises a handful of Monarchs and now Easter Black Swallowtails each summer. She identifies many, many more.
Butterflies know. I’m amazed at the instinctual knowledge of the Monarch caterpillars who know their host plant. Know when it’s time to shed their skin and go into their chrysalis, have their DNA scrambled, and emerge an entirely different-looking creature.
The butterflies know many things.

We recently visited the Boston area of Massachusetts, and I’ve been thinking of the books I’ve read – contemporary or historical – set in this locale. I bet I’m forgetting some! But these are the first that came to mind.
A Passion Most Pure by Julie Lessman

Death, death . . . The crunch of the snow said the word to him over and over.
I can hear this first line. The crunch of hardened snow beneath boots in a steady rhythm as he plods along. Death, cold and foreboding – again and again. It sets a tone for the book and what we can expect. Is it a death from the past that haunts this character, the threat of near death, or death in the future? Or all three? His own death or someone else’s?

Continue readingI’ve yet to read many split-time novels, but I do enjoy those I’ve read! An author’s ability to skillfully interweave themes in two plot lines set in separate eras can enhance and deepen those themes while adding interest for the reader.
Hidden Among the Stars by Melanie Dobson
Was it wicked to say goodbye with a smile?
I love introductory sentences packed with meaning! Nine words, but here’s what they convey:
Someone is happy to be leaving. So happy, in fact, that it brings a smile to her face. (I read ahead so, yes, it’s a woman.) And despite the boldness of her smiling – or contemplating smiling – she feels some compunction about its propriety. Either for its own sake or for the sake of those she’ll happily be rid of.

The Sweetest Rain by Myra Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Impeccable writing and well-developed characters made this novel one of my new favorites. Although forbidden love between a man and woman of different stations or classes is a common trope, nothing about this story felt tired or cliché.
While the hero and heroine and their obstacles were critical to the story, the wider focus on family, including the contrast between a loving family and one fraught with resentment and secrets, made the story that much more moving. Continue reading
